When you use a Red Ryder Range Model 1938 air rifle, you’ll put your eye out, kid.

Very dramatic but I hate to say that physically impossible. Maybe if the bullet had bounced more than once…

What does it mean for our furry ghostly anti-hero? Is he dead for good?

‘physically impossible’ – when talking about magic spells and magic bullets. 😀

What’s that thing about the principle of disbelief or whatever? Well, mine broke but whatever.

Even on a magic shield, the angle of incidence should equal the angle of reflection.

Seems to me that a shield that directs incoming fire back at the source would be a very desirable thing. And if you’re taking the time to develop a non-physical spell that can stop all incoming energy, there’s no reason that it can’t return it all in the same direction. However, I do, somewhat object to it going back through the scope rather than into the barrel.

Yeah, I’d blame that one on simple ballistics, possible bullet deformation, and old fashioned bad luck.

Tolkien dixit: a sufficiently advanced technology is indistinct from magic. This has a drawback: magic is “technology” and hence subject to the laws of nature at some level, what in this case means that you shouldn’t be able break the laws of geometry. At least that’s my opinion.

You are familiar with the concept of a corner cube reflector, correct? Or even simply that the spell re-shapes into a plane at the point of impact? Either is perfectly valid, and doesn’t violate geometry.

Honestly, I am more bugged that it bounced back off a curved surface. It is crazy hard to hit a circle perfectly dead center, particularly at range.

Actually this is the simplest part. Phawkes shot the mage into the center of the head. The mage raised the perfectly circular defense around himself. Stands to reason it’s centered around the center of his head, too. As they both were correct to millimeter (preposterous, but they are high level ;)) ), the result would be just as it is.

Hopefully, between the Reverse Missile Ward and the two lenses and possibly the sides of the scope, as well, the bullet will have shed a lot of energy.

The poll question shouldn’t be “Tolkein or Martin?”. It should be “Game of Thrones or Wild Cards?” With the third choice being “Tuf!” ^_^

The problem about getting a bullet in the eye is that the brain is right behind it …

Not good. This is why you shoot the magic user first.

Being the results of a magic spell, physical impossibility isn’t actually an impediment. The spell just breaks an additional law of physics or two.

Granted, if we had an elaborately fleshed out magical system it might be possible to come up with something that’s still physically impossible while taking the magical system into account, but Delve has not fleshed out its magic to that kind of degree.

Hey, Wormius, just noticed that if you type “thisis.delvecomic.com” you reach a bluehost page with no content. Maybe you should put a redirect there or something?

I looked up the nursery rhyme, because the sniper is interrupted, but all I could find was a song “Three little kittens” with very different lyrics, though related content. Does anyone know where to find the sniper’s poem?

I’d imagine Wormius wrote the poem himself, so here is the only place you’d find it. As for Fawkes’ interruption, the full line probably would have been “to better show you my claws”.

If it was going to be a perfect rebound it should have re-entered the muzzle of the rifle. Of course Phawks might have moved the muzzle a bit after taking the shot. But taking muzzle climb into effect would make the barrel rise and not fall. Phawks would take the hit in the hands and throat. But then again I might be over-analyzing the magical incident in the cool comic strip just a tad.

Somebody above said it best; always shoot the wizard first!

You forget, the angle of the dome is going to deflect the bullet impact upwards a bit.

This is why you use “Teleport Other” to teleport large hunks of rock into the chest of your target! Unless they have an anti-magic shield up, or an anti-teleport amulet, the target is pretty much hosed.

Seems like someone read Carlos Hathcock’s story of his encounter with North Vietnam’s top Sniper “Cobra” back during the Vietnam War. Hathcock was the first *real* sniper to kill another sniper through his own rifle scope.
